Students Reflect on Summer Undergrad Research Program

Feature ImageThis summer, four undergraduates packed their bags and moved across the country (and, for one student, around the world) to spend eight weeks working hands-on in a lab that corresponded to their research interests. Roxie Chuang, Deanna Ibrahim, Maria Escobar, and Precious Hardy participated in the inaugural Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) this past summer. The participants, their mentors, and their graduate student mentors spoke enthusiastically about the program. Read about their experiences, or learn how you can become involved as a participant or as a mentor.

Bad Science Evolves. Stopping It Means Changing Institutional Selection Pressures.

Science is hard. It’s messy and time consuming and doesn’t always (or even often) yield major revelations about the secrets of the universe. That’s OK. Read more on the Character & Context blog.

Cognitive Ability Varies, but Prejudice is Universal

When it comes to prejudice, it does not matter if you are smart or not, or conservative or liberal, each group has their own specific biases. A recent study found that cognitive ability, whether high or low, only predicts prejudice towards specific groups.

The Healthiest Eaters Are the Most Culturally "Fit"

How to be a healthy eater depends on culture. A recent study shows that in the U.S. and Japan, people who fit better with their culture have healthier eating habits.

Report from the SPSP Board Meeting

The SPSP Board of Directors met last month, approving a slate of new initiatives and funding. These include the development of a new non-academic internship database for social and personality psychologists, the approval of new fellows and award-winners, and many additional initiatives. Check out this recap of the meeting's key initiatives.

Fall 2016 Small Research Grants Awarded

The SPSP small research grant program provides funding for SPSP members who work at institutions that do not provide financial support for research. Thirteen members have been awarded small research grants during the Fall 2016 cycle. Get additional details about the grant recipients and their projects.

Honoring 2016 Award Winners

SPSP is honored to recognize its 2016 award recipients, and to offer each recipient a well-deserved congratulations. We thank them for their valuable contributions to personality and social psychology, and look forward to their receiving recognition at the 2017 Annual Convention.

SAGE Young Scholars Awards Currently Accepting Applications

The SAGE Young Scholars Awards recognize outstanding young researchers in personality and social psychology. Five recipients will receive an award of $5,000 to be used for research, study, or conference-travel related purposes. Apply for the SAGE Young Scholars Award.

Setting the Record Straight on 'Wasteful Research'

SPSP member Dr. Lisa Neff was featured in a recent issue of “Setting the Record Straight on ‘Wasteful Research,’” a series by the Consortium of Social Science Associations (COSSA). The program provides researchers whose work is mischaracterized by lawmakers the opportunity to set the record straight about their work’s value and potential.

Bob Cialdini's New Book Published

Bob Cialdini's new book, PRE-SUASION (Simon & Schuster), became available on September 6. This is Bob's first sole-authored book since INFLUENCE, more than 30 years ago. It concerns what savvy communicators do before delivering their message to get it accepted; and it links the literatures on frames, primes, anchors, and mindsets to the social influence process. Read more.
